Proof of university entrance qualification as well as a first university egree (minimum B.A.) is required for enrollment in the Master degree program in Sociology. You must also complete the academic orientation process before the given deadline.
This also applies to students switching to Sociology as a major or minor from another subject and/or in higher semesters.
Please note that the enrollment process is handled centrally by the Office of the University Registrat. All information regarding enrollment after successful application to the Master degree program can be found on the LMU website.
The academic orientation process (Studienorientierungsverfahren) is intended to help applicants orient themselves and enable them to assess their suitability for studying Sociology.
Special requirements include text comprehension, independent thinking and working, basic mathematical skills, and a foundation in the English language.
The process consists of an online self-assessment that can be completed from home, among other places. Please note that the assessment has been optimized for desktop use.
Participation is mandatory for all applicants. The result has no impact on admission to the program. More information can be found in the regulations (PDF, 23 KB).
The online self-assessment must be completed by August 15th for enrollment in the following winter semester.
If the assessment is completed at a later date, the resulting certificate cannot be used for enrollment in the following winter semester, but for the winter semester of the following year.
International students must also apply to the International Office. Participation in the self-assessment is mandatory for all applicants.
Please note that our B.A. degree program in Sociology can only be studied in German. Above-average knowledge of German (level C1 is mandatory, C2 is preferable) is therefore an essential requirement.
More information about studying at the LMU can be found on the website for international applicants and in the International Student Guide.
Good English language skills are also a prerequisite, as English-language courses are also offered and most of the literature is written in English.
