Summer semester 2026
In a Bachelor thesis (final module, 12 ECTS), students should work on a specific sociological problem. Writing a thesis documents the ability to work independently on a sociological problem using scientific methods and to present the results obtained in a professional manner.
The project module (6 ECTS) consists of an accompanying exercise course in which students are introduced to writing a longer academic paper. In addition, the current status of students' theses is presented and discussed.
If you do not submit your Bachelor thesis by the end of the 7th semester, a first attempt will automatically be recorded as "failed" – you may then only submit a second attempt once in the 8th semester.
The registration period (usually one week) is announced by the Examination Office for Humanities and Social Sciences (PAGS). Registration must take place during this period.
Fill in your details on the registration form available on the PAGS website and send it by email as a PDF document to your supervisor or chair office.
The topic of the Bachelor thesis can only be changed once within two weeks of registration if no use was made of this rule on the first attempt.
All students must attend the project module for the Bachelor thesis at the supervising chair, in which an ungraded presentation (assessed as “pass”/“fail”) is held. The project module corresponds to 6 ECTS credits.
More detailed information on the project module can be found on the homepage of the supervising chair.
The cover page of the Bachelor thesis must contain the following information:
All theses are also reviewes for suspected plagiarism. In the event of plagiarism, submissions are graded as “failed” (TA = Täuschung (plagiarism)).
In serious or repeated cases, the examination board will decide to exclude the student from re-examination!
Every thesis must include a declaration of originality signed by the author. You can download both the German (PDF, 59 KB) and English (PDF, 551 KB) versions.
Students are required to submit two bound copies of their Bachelor thesis (printed double-sided) including a signed declaration of originality by the submission deadline to PAGS. Please note the detailed instructions from PAGS regarding submission, and direct all organizational inquiries (including extensions) to PAGS.
You can submit your Bachelor thesis in person or by mail. If relevant, label the envelope as follows:
LMU München
Prüfungsamt für Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften
z.H. Phil.L. Hänßler
Geschwister-Scholl-Platz 1
80539 München
The postmarked date is the submission date
In addition, Bachelor theses must be submitted by the final deadline to the supervisor as a PDF via email.
Bachelor theses graded as “fail” (5.0) must be assessed by a second examiner. If the thesis is failed, the student can re-submit only once in the following semester with a new topic (with the same or a new supervisor).
A re-examination after the 8th semester is not possible.
In a Master thesis (final module, 24 ECTS), students should develop a sociological question based on the relevant state of research, present it precisely, and use methodological tools and methods.
The project module (6 ECTS) consists of an accompanying exercise course in which students present and discuss the current status of their Master thesis.
A first attempt must take place no later than the 5th semester. If you wish to write your Master thesis in the 6th semester, this will already constitute a second attempt — a re-examination will then no longer be possible.

Familiarize yourself with the different chairs and profiles of available supervisor. Each staff member's primary research areas and contact details can be found on the respective pages of each chair.
To ensure that you are familiar with the requirements at the chair you choose, you should have completed at least one exercise course, seminar, or research course at your chosen chair.
Select a supervisor and contact them well in advance. An initial consultation should take place no later than the middle of the previous semester:
If the sueprvisor you contact declines, select another available supervisor. Do not contact several supervisors at the same time! If you have not found a supervisor after several attempts, please contact the Student Affairs Office.
