My exchange semester was one of the best times of my life.

Visiting a country is one thing — but living there among locals, attending university, and immersing yourself in the culture is something completely different. I had expected Australian culture to be quite similar to German culture, but I ended up learning so much — both personally and academically. These experiences have not only enriched my life but will also be a great asset when it comes to future job applications.

The university system in Australia is very different, with new focus areas, different ways of interacting with lecturers, and a truly international learning environment. The input from people all around the world made it a uniquely enriching experience.

Of course, I was a bit nervous in the beginning — leaving familiar things and people behind is never easy. But I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything. Making friends abroad is surprisingly easy — so don’t worry, just be open and bold. Also, Australians are incredibly kind and laid-back. And if you want to spot koalas and wombats, don’t let the fear of spiders and snakes stop you — I barely saw any! 😊

From September 2023 to February 2024, I had the opportunity to study in Antwerp—a city that perfectly combines culture, history, and student life.

Sociology in Antwerp is broadly based—I was particularly enthusiastic about the course on urban and environmental sociology, which included an exciting excursion to London. Antwerp itself enchants with its architecture, delicious chocolates, so-called “frietjes,” and its ideal location for trips within Belgium and to the Netherlands, and with cheap flights from Brussels even to Ireland or Poland! The campus in particular is mystical and picturesque, and I can only recommend living near the campus—spontaneous meetings and activities happen almost by themselves.

In addition to traveling and little language adventures in Flemish, I took advantage of the university's affordable and diverse sports offerings. Overall, I gained new perspectives on social and political issues and enjoyed every minute of it personally. It remains an unforgettable experience that I would recommend to anyone.

Choosing Munich as my Erasmus city was the best decision of my life. It is a vibrant and highly international city where there is always something new to discover, whether by visiting its many museums, cinemas, bars, and clubs or by taking a relaxing walk through the beautiful Englischer Garten. I especially enjoyed the international dinners and karaoke nights organized by the ESN and various student residences.

I also found the courses at LMU very engaging. In particular, I appreciated the strong connection between theory and practice in the classroom. The professors at the Sociology Institute were kind and understanding about my struggles with the German language. Don’t worry if you don’t speak German yet — you can find many excellent courses in English too!

As a student, you can enjoy the wide range of delicious meals available at the Mensa, which is conveniently located near the sociology building. After lunch, the university’s many libraries and the cozy cafés in the Univiertel provide ideal places to study. If you ever feel lost as an international exchange student and would like some (personalized) help, don’t hesitate to apply for the LMU Buddy Program, where an experienced student will help you with anything you need.

My Erasmus exchange at LMU Munich was wonderful, and I would recommend it to anyone who is considering a semester abroad here. I made memories that will last a lifetime – and you can too!
