Hop in, go off-trail, take a detour!
On the last Wednesday of every month at 8 p.m., we discuss a specific topic related to (pop) culture, politics, and science is discussed. The Gender Salon deliberately seeks to connect academic studies with the urban public and therefore takes place at the Glockenbachwerkstatt.
Gender Salon is kindly supported by the Munich Rainbow Foundation, the Altstadt-Lehel District Committee, and the Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt District Committee.

March 4th, 2026 – "The anti-feminist backlash"

Young men vote for the AfD, violence against women is on the rise, and misogynistic role models are celebrated on social media. This event sheds light on the reactionary counter-movement to feminist achievements and the growing appeal of authoritarian ideals of masculinity. We want to discuss why young people in particular are attracted to traditional role models and how feminist resistance can counter the erosion of democratic structures.
Dr. Susanne Kaiser is a journalist and author who has been working for many years on social power relations, radicalization, and misogynistic movements, and acts as an expert on these topics in public media.
March 25th, 2026 - "Muslim men, masculinity, and the media – On the construction and function of narratives"

Tonight's event is dedicated to the media representation of migrant masculinity in journalism, film, and pop culture. The focus is on stereotypical narratives that link masculinity, violence, and foreignness and make them politically effective. The event invites participants to question these images and discuss diversity, representation, and gender equality in a post-migrant society.
Fikri Anıl Altıntaş is an author and essayist who writes about anti-feminism and the (de)construction of migrant-marked masculinities. He writes for DIE ZEIT and Deutschlandfunk Kultur, among others, combining autobiographical perspectives with social analysis.
April 29th, 2026 - "king-ing the drag – drag-ing the king"
Bridge Markland (performer)
In her lecture performance, Bridge Markland talks about her life and work as a drag and gender performer. The audience learns how her performances came about—how research on the street and in clubs led to her most famous transformation performance. The highlight is her live transformation into "The Most Beautiful Woman in the World."
Berlin-based performer Bridge Markland is a pioneer of drag and gender performances in Germany. She combines dance, theater, drag, and puppetry and has been organizing tours and shows since 1994, such as the go drag! festival featuring art by women, trans*, and non-binary drag artists.
May 27th, 2026 - "Spaces of encounter – spaces of power: Awareness and empowerment in Munich's nightlife"
Luzia Beer (MoNa specialist unit)
Clubs, bars, and dance floors in Munich's nightlife scene are places where people meet, but they are also settings where power relations, exclusion, and discrimination become visible. The evening will feature a keynote speech by Luzia Beer, practical insights into her awareness work in Munich, and space for discussion on how nightlife culture can be made more diverse, inclusive, and free of discrimination.
Luzia Beer is involved in raising awareness and promoting diversity in nightlife at the Fachstelle Moderation der Nacht (MoNa) in Munich. She is a supervisor, mediator, musician, and performer, and promotes solidarity and critical engagement with structures of power and discrimination in workshops.
July 1st, 2026 - "Masculinity as a longing"

Men follow men: on social media, gym and crypto bros, dating coaches, and even skincare influencers offer a panorama of contemporary masculinities—idealized and presented as desirable. Modern action and superhero films also cater to this longing for masculinity. The evening examines which patriarchal continuities and feminist ruptures shape this longing and how the masculinist radicalization of young men can be stopped.
Ole Liebl, born in 1992 in a village in Rhineland-Palatinate, studied philosophy and computer science at the Technical University and Free University of Berlin. On TikTok and Instagram, Liebl provides scientific insights into various topics related to sexuality, gender, and relationships.
October 28th, 2026 - "Perpetration from a queer-feminist perspective"

How can we think about perpetration from a queerfeminist perspective today? Using fictional and non-fictional books, we want to discuss how intersectional approaches change conceptions of perpetration and what ideas of perpetration can be observed in current debates, for example around the Pélicot trial.
The queer-feminist bookstore glitch opened its doors in November 2023 in the former premises of Lillemor's, Germany's first women's bookstore. Run by a volunteer collective, the bookstore offers a meeting place for queer people. And, of course, a place for lots of queer-feminist literature!
November 25th, 2026 – "Living together beyond the dictates of romance"

For centuries, love stories have followed a similar script: fall in love, get engaged, get married—or, in more modern terms: date, crush, fall in love, move in together, have children, become a family. But intimate cohabitation looks different in this country now: the number of people willing to marry is declining, while divorce rates, single-person households, loneliness, and the number of single mothers and fathers are on the rise. Despite these breaks, the longing to finally find "the one" remains.
In her books "Das Ende des Romantikdiktats" (The End of the Dictates of Romance, 2023) and "Wie Familie, nur besser" (Like Family, Only Better, 2025), Andrea Newerla, who holds a doctorate in sociology and is an author and relationship counselor, asks why romantic relationships between two people still seem to be the predominant guarantee of our need for closeness and love. She also explores alternative possibilities for social interaction.
